Safety Alert: Heightened Awareness Urged for Snake Safety
March 22, 2024
As spring brings warmer temperatures and increased snake activity, Bolivar Medical Center reaffirms its commitment to community safety by ensuring readiness to provide prompt and effective treatment for venomous snake bites.
As temperatures rise, snakes become more active across Mississippi, where six venomous species are commonly found. Snake envenomation, or bites, is a defensive response triggered when the snake feels threatened or startled, often occurring when individuals attempt to handle or kill the reptile.
According to the Mississippi Poison Control Center, venomous snakes in Mississippi can strike at speeds close to 3 meters per second, with a range extending several feet. It's crucial to avoid handling dead snakes, even decapitated ones, as they can still reflexively strike. Remarkably, approximately 20% of snake bites may be "dry," delivering no venom.
Understanding the potential dangers associated with snake bites, Bolivar Medical Center has taken proactive measures to equip its facility with the necessary medications and expertise to address such emergencies on site.
"Our team at Bolivar Medical Center recognizes the importance of being prepared to respond to medical emergencies, including venomous snake bites," said Bob Wilbanks, Pharmacy Director at Bolivar Medical Center. "By having the appropriate medications and trained staff readily available, we ensure that individuals in our community receive timely and effective treatment in the event of a snake bite."
If bitten by a venomous snake, prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent complications and mitigate the effects of envenomation. Bolivar Medical Center is prepared to administer the necessary medications and provide comprehensive care to snake bite victims, ensuring the best possible outcome.
"We want our community members to feel confident that Bolivar Medical Center is here to support them in times of need," added Kempton MacLeod, Director of Emergency Services. "If you or someone you know is bitten by a venomous snake, do not hesitate to seek medical assistance immediately. Our team is here to help."
As spring unfolds, it's vital for individuals to remain vigilant and informed about snake safety measures. By exercising caution and following these guidelines, everyone can contribute to minimizing the risks associated with snake encounters.
Key Guidelines in Case of Snake Bite:
- Stay Calm: Maintain composure and seek medical assistance immediately.
- Call for Help: Dial 911 if symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, or loss of consciousness occur.
- Immobilization: Elevate the bitten extremity at the level of the heart.
- Do Not: Apply tourniquets, ice, attempt to lance the wound, or suction out venom.
- Electrocution Warning: Refrain from electrocuting the bitten extremity, as this can exacerbate the injury.
